چکیده

This paper gives a survey of some of the issues involved in formation flight of satellites near a halo orbit. An example of the use of such a formation is to act as a telescope for imaging interesting astronomical objects, such as extra-solar planets. Issues such as formation establishment, stability and dynamics of the formation, control and reconfiguration, coverage analysis, and inter-satellite communications are discussed. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the tasks involved, an approach that involves several areas of research is needed. I. I NTRODUCTION . Formation flight near libration points offers a unique opportunity to establish a long-baseline imaging capability. Such capabilities are obviously of great long-range importance for NASA. The Challenge Using the experience gained in the last few years with missions such as the Genesis Discovery Mission, we have learned a great deal about the dynamics near the Sun-Earth libration points L 1 and L 2 (see fig. 1). However, this knowledge has also revealed how subtle and sensitive the dynamics are. Formation flight is even more challenging, with its own unique problems of stability, formation reconfiguration, and many other associated issues, which have not yet been addressed. Some of these issues are also being considered in studies of formation flight in nearEarth orbits; cooperative studies will, therefore, be essential. Figure 1. Prospects for the Use of Space Robots in the Neighbourhood of the Libration Points

This paper is devoted to the navigation tasks for space robots operating in the neighborhood of unstable libration points of the Earth-Sun system in the near-Earth space. The motion of robot in space is examined under a circular restricted three-body problem. The possibility of a space robot maneuvering in the near-Earth space with return to the neighborhood of a collinear libration point and s...

Midcourse Trajectory Shaping for Air and Ballistic Defence Guidance Using Bezier Curves

A near-optimal midcourse trajectory shaping guidance algorithm is proposed for both air and ballistic target engagement mission attributes for generic long range interceptor missile. This guidance methodology is based on the maximum final velocity as the objective function and maximum permissible flight altitude as the in-flight state constraint as well as the head-on orientation as the termina...

Iac-05-c1.6.01 Transfers between the Earth-moon and Sun-earth Systems Using Manifolds and Transit Orbits

The L1 and L2 libration points have been proposed as gateways granting inexpensive access to interplanetary space. The lunar libration points, in conjunction with the collinear libration points in the Sun-Earth system, may also become primary hubs for future human activities in the Earth’s neighborhood. The associated manifold tubes have been introduced by a number of researchers as the basis f...

Identification of Halo Orbits for Energy Efficient Formation Flying

This contribution is concerned with the numerical simulation of spacecraft formation dynamics on Halo orbits around the Sun-Earth libration points. The circular restricted three-body problem (CRTBP) in rotating coordinates serves as the analytical framework. The primary goal is to identify regions in phase space in which the uncontrolled dynamics induces only very small perturbations on satelli...

Simulation of Formation Flight Near L2 for the TPF Mission

The TPF Mission (Terrestrial Planet Finder) is one of the center pieces of the NASA Origins Program. The goal of TPF is to identify terrestrial planets around stars nearby the Solar System. For this purpose, a space-based infrared interferometer with a baseline of approximately 100 m is required. To achieve such a large baseline, a distributed system of five spacecraft flying in formation is an...
